Lafayette’s historic PGA Tour stop didn't just host champions—it hosted true trailblazers. The legendary Dr. Charlie Sifford, the first African American player to earn a full-time PGA Tour card and a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, was a regular competitor at Lafayette's Cajun Classic!

His ultimate highlight on our local soil came during the tournament's grand finale in November 1968. Chewing his signature cigar, Sifford put on a masterful display of precision golf at Oakbourne to secure a spectacular 2nd Place Runner-Up finish, beating out a field of the world's absolute best. His legacy reminds us that golf in Lafayette has always been part of a grander American story.
